• Congenital heart disease (heart defects present at birth) occur in 8 of every 1,000 newborns.
• It is the most common type of birth defect.
• Congenital heart disease causes more deaths in the first year of life than any other birth defects.
• Without treatment most newborns with congenital heart defects do not survive. But with modern treatment more than 90% survive into adulthood.
• The majority of patients born with congenital heart defects are now adults.
• Over 5000 patients have been enrolled in CHSS Data Center studies in the past decade.
• Our oldest study has been following enrolled patients for 25 years.
• The CHSS has over 100 surgeon Members and over 60 different institutions across North America enrolling patients.
• The Data Centre is supported by annual contributions from each CHSS institution and by the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, as well as grants from organizations listed on the Sponsorship sponsor wall.
